Concept note-1: -Abraham Lincoln Lincoln was president during the Civil War, with his election being cited by southern states as one of the reasons for their succession. Lincoln’s two terms in office saw the Union defeat the Confederacy and the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Concept note-2: -On July 21, 1861, in the first major land battle of the Civil War, a large Union force under General Irvin McDowell is routed by a Confederate army under General Pierre G.T. Beauregard.

Concept note-3: -The South’s greatest strength lay in the fact that it was fighting on the defensive in its own territory. Familiar with the landscape, Southerners could harass Northern invaders. The military and political objectives of the Union were much more difficult to accomplish.

Concept note-4: -The Union’s forces were slow in positioning themselves, allowing Confederate reinforcements time to arrive by rail. Each side had about 18, 000 poorly trained and poorly led troops. It was a Confederate victory, followed by a disorganized retreat of the Union forces. First Battle of Bull Run.
