Why was leading a Virginia brigade from the Shenandoah Valley into the battle a key moment.

Concept note-1: -In 1864, Union General Philip Sheridan embarked on a campaign aimed at depriving the Confederate Army of vital natural resources and supplies. Sheridan won a series of battles that wrested control of the valley away from the Confederates, though sporadic fighting continued until the end of the war.

Concept note-2: -In May, it was decided to move the Confederate capital from Montgomery, Alabama, to Richmond, Virginia, in large part because regardless of the Virginian capital’s political status its defense was deemed vital to the Confederacy’s survival.

Concept note-3: -The United States Civil War, fought between 1861 and 1865, featured many major and minor engagements, and military actions. Among the most significant were the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Vicksburg Campaign.

Concept note-4: -Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson had orders for a strategic distraction in the Shenandoah Valley. In March 1862 he marched his small army of about 3, 500 men northward from Mount Jackson, determined to strike the Federals.
