Concept note-1: -In January 1893 Dole agreed to serve as the leader of the committee, acting for Hawaiian sugar interests and their American allies, that was formed to overthrow Queen Liliuokalani (who had succeeded her brother, Kalakaua, in 1891) and to seek annexation of Hawaii by the United States.

Concept note-2: -Image courtesy of the Hawaii State Archives Sanford B. Dole, who advocated the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and urged the United States to annex the islands, became the first territorial governor of Hawaii in 1900.

Concept note-3: -A Supreme Court judge of the former Kingdom of Hawaii, Sanford Ballard Dole helped establish the Republic of Hawaii and was its only president. He was instrumental in the annexation of the islands by the United States and became the first governor of the Territory of Hawaii.

Concept note-4: -O’Sullivan, who was an influential advocate for the Democratic Party. In an essay entitled “Annexation” published in the Democratic Review, O’Sullivan urged the United States to annex the Republic of Texas, because Texas desired this, and because it was America’s “manifest destiny to overspread the continent".

Concept note-5: -Spurred by the nationalism aroused by the Spanish-American War, the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898 at the urging of President William McKinley.
