EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -Among other accomplishments, during the Meiji period Japan adopted a constitution and a parliamentary system, instituted universal education, built railroads and installed telegraph lines, and established strong army and navy forces.
Concept note-2: -The Meiji reforms brought great changes both within Japan and in Japan’s place in world affairs. Japan strengthened itself enough to remain a sovereign nation in the face of Western colonizing powers and indeed became a colonizing power itself.
Concept note-3: -So it was the Meiji Restoration that made Japan a nation-state. During the era of the shogunate, each region had its own military, controlled by samurai loyal to their daimyo. Under the Meiji emperor, these regional armies were replaced by a national army, and all male citizens were required to serve in the military.
Concept note-4: -years of the Meiji period. The new national army was intended basically to function as a military police force to protect the newly established government against the dis-affected feudal clans, a restless peasantry, and general malcontents.
