EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -President Theodore Roosevelt oversaw the realization of a long-term United States goal-a trans-isthmian canal. Throughout the 1800s, American and British leaders and businessmen wanted to ship goods quickly and cheaply between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Concept note-2: -Prior to the Panama’s Canal’s construction, ships had to travel around the entire continent of South America to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. Construction of the Canal shortened the route ships traveled when voyaging around the world.

Concept note-3: -The route used before the construction of the Panama canal was to travel round the “Cape Horn” (located in southernmost tip of South America), covering a distance of approximately 24, 000 Kms. (San Francisco to New York). This travel takes approximately a month.

Concept note-4: -The Panama Canal is a constructed waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the Isthmus of Panama. It is owned and administered by Panama, and it is 40 miles long from shoreline to shoreline.
