EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -America’s annexation of Hawaii in 1898 extended U.S. territory into the Pacific and resulted from economic integration and the rise of the United States as a Pacific power. For most of the 1800s, leaders in Washington were concerned that Hawaii might become part of a European nation’s empire.

Concept note-2: -House Joint Resolution 259, 55th Congress, 2nd session, known as the “Newlands Resolution, ” passed Congress and was signed into law by President McKinley on July 7, 1898-the Hawaiian islands were officially annexed by the United States. Sanford Dole became the first Governor of the Territory of Hawaii.

Concept note-3: -In 1959, Hawaii’s status was linked to Alaska’s and both territories became states that year. It took 60 years from the time Hawaii became a United States territory until it was declared a state on August 21st, 1959. A sovereignty movement still exists today among Native Hawaiians.

Concept note-4: -The U.S. presence in Hawai’i grew out of the need for a substantial base of operations in the Pacific to support U.S. interests in China. Ultimately this need became so great, and the U.S. presence so large, that the United States annexed the islands in 1898.
