Concept note-1: -This letter, written by the Spanish Ambassador to the United States, Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, criticized American President William McKinley by calling him weak and concerned only with gaining the favor of the crowd.

Concept note-2: -Facsimile of Letter Written by the Spanish Minister Publication of the letter helped generate public support for a war with Spain over the issue of independence for the Spanish colony of Cuba.

Concept note-3: -American newspapers fanned the flames of interest in the war by fabricating atrocities which justified intervention in a number of Spanish colonies worldwide. Several forces within the United States were pushing for a war with Spain.
