EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The school administrators’ mission was to remove indigenous children from the families and communities to assimilate them and stop the passing-on of indigenous culture. The boarding schools forced indigenous children to adopt Euro-American culture.

Concept note-2: -But while there was triumph, there was also much pain; Curtis said children were forced to do manual labor, were physically abused and were prohibited from speaking their native language. While some students were sent there by their families, others were forced to attend by the federal government.

Concept note-3: -Loss of cultural identity Students who were stripped of their language, forced to cut their hair, and converted to Christianity lost significant connection to their tribe and their culture. While some students left boarding schools and returned home, many others did not and thus forever lost their cultural identity.

Concept note-4: -The purpose of the school, the first nonreservation Indian school funded by the federal government, was to “civilize” Native American children by removing them from their reservations, immersing them in the values of white society, and teaching them a trade.
