EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -The first presidential election by popular vote was on September 15, 1935, after the ratification of the 1935 Constitution of the Philippines; Manuel Quezon of the Nacionalista Party emerged as the victor, defeating previous president Emilio Aguinaldo (Aguinaldo was elected president by the Malolos Congress).

Concept note-2: -On January 23, 1899, the Malolos Constitution-by virtue of which the Philippines was declared a republic and which had been approved by the assembly and by Aguinaldo-was proclaimed. Aguinaldo, who had been president of the provisional government, was elected president.

Concept note-3: -The Congress, as representatives of the different provinces of the Philippines, then elected Aguinaldo President of the Philippines.

Concept note-4: -On January 1, 1899 following the meetings of a constitutional convention, Aguinaldo was proclaimed president of the Philippine Republic. Not surprisingly, the United States refused to recognize Aguinaldo’s authority and on February 4, 1899 he declared war on the U.S. forces in the islands.
