Concept note-1: -A canal is a human-made waterway that allows boats and ships to pass from one body of water to another. The Gowanus Canal was built in the mid-1800s and once served as a major commercial route to New York Harbor. A variety of industries that operated along its banks released contaminants into the canal.
Concept note-2: -Modern uses Large-scale ship canals such as the Panama Canal and Suez Canal continue to operate for cargo transportation, as do European barge canals.
Concept note-3: -Transport by inland waterways may be on navigable rivers or those made navigable by canalization (dredging and bank protection) or on artificial waterways called canals.
