EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -In 1917, Germany adopted a defensive strategy on the Western Front to counter the growing strength of the Allies. Despite launching several offensives, and suffering heavy casualties, the Allies achieved mixed results.

Concept note-2: -The trench systems on the Western Front were roughly 475 miles long, stretching from the English Channel to the Swiss Alps, although not in a continuous line.

Concept note-3: -The war opened with massive, sweeping battles across the European landscape, but then bogged down into a bloody stalemate that lasted nearly three years.

Concept note-4: -Soldiers rotated into and out of the front lines to provide a break from the stress of combat. They spent four to six days in the front trenches before moving back and spending an equal number of days in the secondary and, finally, the reserve trenches.
