Concept note-1: -Nationalism was a factor in the outbreak of World War I as many nations, particularly the Great powers of-Britain, France and Germany, of the time had convinced themselves of the cultural, economic and military supremacy of their nation.

Concept note-2: -Nationalism played a specific role in World War I when Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated by Princip, a member of a Serbian nationalist terrorist group fighting against Austria-Hungary’s rule over Bosnia.

Concept note-3: -2. Four empires collapsed: the Russian Empire in 1917, the German and the Austro-Hungarian in 1918, and the Ottoman in 1922. 3. Independent republics were formed in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Turkey.

Concept note-4: -Nationalism was the force behind the assassination of the Archduke of Austria Hungary, Franz Ferdinand. The assassination was the spark that set off the alliance system. The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Austria-Hungarian Empire were in decline leading into the 20th century.
