Concept note-1: -This weapon, along with barbed wire and mines, made movement across open land both difficult and dangerous. Thus trench warfare was born. The British introduced tanks in 1916; they were used with airplanes and artillery to advance the front. The advent of chemical warfare added to the soldier’s perils.
Concept note-2: -These new tanks, built to break the stalemate of trench warfare, were unlike anything in use today. They were long and rhomboidal in shape with tracks encircling the body to aid in crossing deep and wide trenches.
Concept note-3: -Tanks. Tanks were developed by the British Army as a mechanical solution to the trench warfare stalemate. They were first used on the Somme in September 1916, but they were mechanically unreliable and too few in number to secure a victory.
Concept note-4: -Tanks were used in battle for the first time, by the British, on 15 September 1916 at Flers-Courcelette during the Battle of the Somme.
Concept note-5: -The original tank, the Mark I was a heavy vehicle designed to flatten enemy fortifications. It was developed to be able to cross trenches, resist small-arms fire, travel over difficult terrain, carry supplies, and to capture fortified enemy positions.
