Concept note-1: -The immediate cause of World War I that made the aforementioned items come into play (alliances, imperialism, militarism, nationalism) was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. In June 1914, a Serbian-nationalist terrorist group called the Black Hand sent groups to assassinate the Archduke.
Concept note-2: -During the 1930s, the combination of the Great Depression and the memory of tragic losses in World War I contributed to pushing American public opinion and policy toward isolationism. Isolationists advocated non-involvement in European and Asian conflicts and non-entanglement in international politics.
Concept note-3: -One example of isolationism is China. China cut itself off from the world in the fifteenth century and generally tried to stay isolated from that point forward. While China had sent out huge expeditions in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, no more expeditions sailed later on.
