What fueled the United States’ reluctance to join the League of Nations?

(A) The U.S. had very poor relations with the governments of Britain and France.

(B) It was the height of the Great Depression, and the U.S. needed to focus on its own economy.

(C) The U.S. had never been involved in a war or treaty with European countries, and wanted to keep it that way.

(D) ** Republicans were concerned that the League would be too expensive and would reduce the U.S.’s ability to defend its own interests.

Concept note-1: -Although US President Woodrow Wilson was an enthusiastic proponent of the League, the United States did not officially join the League of Nations due to opposition from isolationists in Congress.

Concept note-2: -International organization founded in 1919 to promote world peace but greatly weakened by the refusal of the United States to join. It proved ineffectual in stopping aggression by Italy, Japan, and Germany in the 1930s.

Concept note-3: -Why did the Americans not want to join the league of nations? They believed in isolationism and didn’t want to get involved in Europe’s affairs. Many Americans thought the Treaty of Versailles was unfair.
