Concept note-1: -Poland, which had long been divided among Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary, was reconstituted. Russian land yielded the new nations of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Russia and Austria-Hungary gave up additional territory to Poland and Romania.

Concept note-2: -Assorted References. The major Allied powers in World War I were Great Britain (and the British Empire), France, and the Russian Empire, formally linked by the Treaty of London of September 5, 1914.

Concept note-3: -The British and French wanted somehow to crush Germany’s military capability, both as revenge and as insurance against a second conflict. They also came to want to carve up the Ottoman Empire between them, and to allow the component parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to set up independent states.

Concept note-4: -Over 1.3 million Indian servicemen fought in World War 1 and there were over 70, 000 fatalities. The Indian Army dominated, but the Indian Navy also contributed and Indians served in the Army Flying Corps. There were also labour battalions recruited from Bengal.
