Concept note-1: -Nansen was a scientist, polar hero, political activist and diplomat. He got a PhD in zoology in 1888. In the same year, he was the first to cross Greenland’s inland ice. He subsequently failed to reach the North Pole, but became internationally famous nevertheless.

Concept note-2: -He published a sixvolume report of the Fram expedition that remains a major reference on the Arctic Ocean. He also designed several instruments still in common use, including the Nansen bottle, a device used to collect pure samples of sea water at given depths.

Concept note-3: -Fridtjof Nansen (October 10, 1861-May 13, 1930) was born at Store Frøen, near Oslo.

Concept note-4: -Nansen’s Fram expedition of 1893–1896 was an attempt by the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen to reach the geographical North Pole by harnessing the natural east–west current of the Arctic Ocean.
