Concept note-1: -Regardless, “Remember the Maine” became the rallying cry for war. April 19, the U.S. Congress declared Cuba free of Spanish rule, and on April 25 there was a formal declaration of war.

Concept note-2: -A Spotlight on a Primary Source by Harper’s Weekly While the sinking of the Maine was not a direct cause of the Spanish-American War, it did accelerate the breakdown in diplomatic relations between the US and Spain. “Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!” became a rallying cry.

Concept note-3: -Fueled by public outrage over the Maine’s destruction, as well as concern for the Cuban rebels and opposition to European colonization of the Americas, on April 25, 1898, the United States declared war against Spain. “Remember the Maine!” became pro-war Americans’ signature rallying cry.

Concept note-4: -The Spanish–American War (April 21 – August 13, 1898) was a period of armed conflict between Spain and the United States. Hostilities began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba, leading to United States intervention in the Cuban War of Independence.
