Concept note-1: -The United States emerged from the war as a world power, with control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam. In 1902 the United States withdrew its troops from Cuba, and Cuba became a republic.

Concept note-2: -The 1898 Treaty of Paris ending the war gave Cuba its independence and also ceded important Spanish possessions to the United States-notably Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and the small island of Guam. The United States was suddenly a colonial power with overseas dependencies.

Concept note-3: -In the Mexican American War (1846-1848), the U.S. conquered the northern half of Mexico. In the Spanish-American War of 1898, the U.S. seized control of the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. After these acts of imperialism, when one country extends its authority over another, the U.S. became a world power.

Concept note-4: -The war ended with the 1898 Treaty of Paris, negotiated on terms favorable to the United States. The treaty ceded ownership of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine islands from Spain to the United States and granted the United States temporary control of Cuba.
