How did the US benefit from the construction of the Panama Canal?

Concept note-1: -The Panama Canal was one of the largest public investments of its time. In the first decade of its operation, the Canal produced significant social returns for the United States. Most of these returns were due to the transportation of petroleum from California to the East Coast.

Concept note-2: -Benefits: a faster path between U.S. coasts, lower shipping costs, revenues from ships using the canal, and a presence in Central America. Drawbacks: Latin Americans were angry at how the U.S. obtained the land, many workers died during construction.

Concept note-3: -More than a century ago, the opening of the Panama Canal revolutionized international trade by making it much quicker and easier to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Concept note-4: -With the help of the United States, a revolution occurred in Colombia that led to Panama’s proclaiming its independence on November 4, 1903. A scant two weeks later Panama signed a treaty allowing the U.S. to build, own, and control the Panama Canal.
