EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -As leader of the “Stand Firm” (Oni pa’a) movement, Liliuokalani fought steadfastly against U.S. annexation of Hawaii. Though Cleveland was sympathetic, his successor William McKinley was not, and his government annexed Hawaii in July 1898.

Concept note-2: -Princess Liliuokalani of Hawaii came to the throne to be the Queen in 1891, she wanted Hawaiians to regain economic control of thier islands, in accordance to that, she took away the powers of the american sugar planters causing them to assemble thier own provisional government.

Concept note-3: -She stated that her throne had been taken illegally, and that any U.S. efforts to annex Hawaii without the due process of law would be unacceptable. As a territory, Hawaii had little power in the U.S. government, holding only one, non-voting representative in the House of Representatives.
