EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -This maritime expansion, driven mostly by commerce, had important implications for U.S. foreign policy. The appeal of profits to be earned from the China trade served as the initial impetus to motivate U.S. citizens and officials to enter into the Pacific region.

Concept note-2: -Both a desire for new markets for its industrial products and a belief in the racial and cultural superiority of Americans motivated the United States’ imperial mission.

Concept note-3: -Ultimately, annexation was achieved due to the perceived threat of the Japanese invasion. Waves of Japanese came to the islands in increasing numbers to work in the sugar trade. U.S. military leaders feared potential Japanese occupation of the islands and created a strategic naval base in the center of the Pacific.

Concept note-4: -By the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848, the United States had extended sovereignty from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and from the 49th parallel on the Canadian border to the Rio Grande in the south.
