Concept note-1: -How did imperialism increase tensions among European nations? What is imperialism? The competition for oversea empires created a sense of rivalry and mistrust of one another. The nations of Europe competed fiercely for colonies in Africa and Asia.

Concept note-2: -European Expansionism The expansion of European nations as empires (also known as imperialism) can be seen as a key cause of World War I, because as countries like Britain and France expanded their empires, it resulted in increased tensions among European countries.

Concept note-3: -Imperialism adversely affected the colonies. Under foreign rule, native culture and industry were destroyed. Imported goods wiped out local craft industries. By using colonies as sources of raw materials and markets for manufactured goods, colonial powers held back the colonies from developing industries.

Concept note-4: -Therefore, historians consider the economic benefits of imperialism as a major motive or cause of sparking the Age of Imperialism. In fact, the economic benefits of imperialism sparked a competition between the rival imperialistic nations, which led to a more widespread colonization during the 19th and 20th centuries.
