Concept note-1: -The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest invasion force in human history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France.

Concept note-2: -France was the first Axis occupied nation to be liberated by the Allied forces. Because the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan so devastated their nation, they became the first of the Axis powers to surrender to the Allies.

Concept note-3: -In April 1942, Gen. Douglas MacArthur became Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area, with headquarters in Australia; and Adm. Chester W. Nimitz became Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Area, with headquarters in Hawaii.

Concept note-4: -Why was the D-Day invasion crucial for the Allies’ Europe First strategy? The invasion was key in forcing the Germans to retreat east.
