Concept note-1: -Based on the consensus on the Security Council’s structure agreed upon at the 1944 Dumbarton Oaks Conference and subsequently at UN’s founding in 1945, the five permanent members of the Security Council were the French Republic, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Concept note-2: -The UN Charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by representatives of the 50 countries attending the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. Poland, which was not represented, signed it later and became one of the UN’s original 51 Member States.

Concept note-3: -The Council is composed of 15 Members: Five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly (with end of term year): Albania (2023)

Concept note-4: -In all, the San Francisco Conference was not only one of the most important in history but, perhaps, the largest international gathering ever to take place. The conference took place from April 25 to June 26, 1945. The process of writing a Charter for the United Nations took two months.
