Concept note-1: -In May 1935 France signed a treaty of friendship and mutual support with the USSR. Germany claimed the treaty was hostile to them and Hitler used this as an excuse to send German troops into the Rhineland in March 1936, contrary to the terms of the treaties of Versailles and Locarno.

Concept note-2: -March 7, 1936-Hitler Reoccupies the Rhineland On March 7, 1936, Adolf Hitler sent over 20, 000 troops back into the Rhineland, an area that was supposed to remain a demilitarized zone according to the Treaty of Versailles.

Concept note-3: -After the Nazi regime took power in January 1933, Germany began working towards rearmament and the remilitarization of the Rhineland.

Concept note-4: -Rhineland, German Rheinland, French Rhénanie, historically controversial area of western Europe lying in western Germany along both banks of the middle Rhine River. It lies east of Germany’s border with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Concept note-5: -The purpose of the occupation was on the one hand to give France security against a renewed German attack, and on the other to serve as a guarantee for reparations obligations.
