EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -As the United States mobilized for WWII, Georgians answered their Nation’s call. Southern states were critical to the war effort during World War II (1941-1945), and none more so than Georgia. Over 300, 000 Georgians served in the military, and thousands of civilians worked in rapidly expanding wartime industries.

Concept note-2: -Georgia played a significant role during America’s participation in World War I (1917-18). The state was home to more training camps than any other state and, by the war’s end, it had contributed more than 100, 000 men and women to the war effort.

Concept note-3: -From 1945 to 1970, several factors influenced Georgia’s growth. The shift from rural agrarianism to factory jobs after World War II resulted in larger urban populations.

Concept note-4: -Just as in World War I, Georgia helped train many soldiers, sailors, and aviators during World War II. Fort Benning (Columbus), Fort Gordon (Augusta), Fort Stewart (Savannah), and Robins Air Force Base were just some of the many training facilities that brought jobs and businesses for local area civilians.
