Concept note-1: -General Dwight D Eisenhower (1890-1969) was appointed Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces (SCAEF) for Operation ‘Overlord’ in late 1943 and headed SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force), which oversaw the entire liberation of Nazi-occupied north-west Europe.

Concept note-2: -Eisenhower led the opening phases of the Italian campaign, but was subsequently assigned to lead the Allied invasion of Western Europe in December 1943. He served as the supreme commander of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy, and took command of subsequent operations in France.

Concept note-3: -After the United States entered World War II, Eisenhower rose rapidly through the army ranks. He led the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942 and became the supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in 1943. On June 6, 1944-D-Day-he commanded the Allied invasion of western Europe at Normandy, France.
