WWI was the first war in which

EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -WWI was the first war in which women officially served in the armed forces although only in noncombat positions. Women served as nurses and and clerical, but they were also radio operators, electricians, pharmacists, photographers, chemists, and torpedo assemblers.

Concept note-2: -Most women Yeomen served stateside on naval bases, replacing men who had deployed to Europe. While many female recruits performed clerical duties, some worked as truck drivers, mechanics, radio operators, telephone operators, translators, camouflage artists and munition workers.

Concept note-3: -However, WWI is also notable because it was the first time women – who did not yet have the right to vote – were allowed to openly serve in the U.S. military.

Concept note-4: -Women in Military Service: Nurses & War Support Women were eager to show their patriotic support for the war effort. During the Great War, 21, 498 U.S. Army nurses and 1, 476 U.S. Navy nurses served in military hospitals in the United States and overseas.

Concept note-5: -Milunka Savić fought in the Balkan Wars and in World War I. She has been recognized as the most-decorated female combatant in the history of warfare, and was wounded no fewer than nine times during her service. Savić was born in the village of Koprivnica, Serbia.
