EXPLANATIONS BELOW

Concept note-1: -As Reichspräsident, Friedrich Ebert at first rejected the Treaty of Versailles because he did not accept the terms of peace nor that Germany was solely responsible for the outbreak of the First World War. But within a few days he accepted as Realpolitiker, that Germany had to sign the peace treaty.

Concept note-2: -The terms of the Treaty were very damaging to Germany: territory was taken from Germany-depriving it of valuable industrial and agricultural income. Article 231, the War Guilt Clause blamed Germany and her allies for starting the war – this led to feelings of humiliation and anger.

Concept note-3: -Friedrich Ebert, (born February 4, 1871, Heidelberg, Germany-died February 28, 1925, Berlin), leader of the Social Democratic movement in Germany and a moderate socialist, who was a leader in bringing about the constitution of the Weimar Republic, which attempted to unite Germany after its defeat in World War I.
