EXPLANATIONS BELOW
Concept note-1: -The first railway on Indian sub-continent ran over a stretch of 21 miles from Bombay to Thane. The idea of a railway to connect Bombay with Thane, Kalyan and with the Thal and Bhore Ghats inclines first occurred to Mr. George Clark, the Chief Engineer of the Bombay Government, during a visit to Bhandup in 1843.
Concept note-2: -The railway was one of the important modern technology introduced in India by the British during colonial rule. The first ever railway line in the country was built between Bombay and Thane during the tenure of Lord Dalhousie.
Concept note-3: -India’s first railway opened in 1853, a 32 km line between Bombay and Thane.
Concept note-4: -The transmission system employed a large flywheel to even out the action of the piston rod. On 21 February 1804, the world’s first steam-powered railway journey took place when Trevithick’s unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales.
