Why were many people skeptical of Obama winning the Nobel Prize?

Concept note-1: -On Oct. 9, 2009, President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for what the Norwegian Nobel Committee called “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” On this date: In 1888, the public was first admitted to the Washington Monument.

Concept note-2: -Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin, and Shimon Peres, 1994 The choice of Yasser Arafat as one of the prize winners was controversial. Since half of the prize went to the Israeli side and half went to the Palestinian side, this was the justification for his inclusion.

Concept note-3: -The Nobel Peace Prize was first presented in 1901 and is today considered one of the most prestigious – and sometimes controversial – awards. The selection process has at times been marred by accusations of sexism, racism and the award committee being Eurocentric.

Concept note-4: -Nobel Peace Prize controversies often reach beyond the academic community. Criticism that have been levelled against some of the awards include allegations that they were politically motivated, premature, or guided by a faulty definition of what constitutes work for peace.
