Detailed explanation-1: -The stratum corneum is the most superficial layer of the epidermis and is the layer exposed to the outside environment (see Figure 5.1. 4). The increased keratinization (also called cornification) of the cells in this layer gives it its name. There are usually 15 to 30 layers of cells in the stratum corneum.

Detailed explanation-2: -The keratinocytes from the squamous layer are then pushed up through two thin epidermal layers called the stratum granulosum and the stratum lucidum. As these cells move further towards the surface of the skin, they get bigger and flatter and adhere together, and then eventually become dehydrated and die.
