Concept note-1: -Irreconcilables, Senators Borah and Johnson, refuse to compromise on the passage of the Treaty of Versailles which Senator Lodge is guiding through the Senate. Political cartoon, 1920.
Concept note-2: -In the face of Wilson’s continued unwillingness to negotiate, the Senate on November 19, 1919, for the first time in its history, rejected a peace treaty.
Concept note-3: -The opposition came from two groups: the “Irreconcilables, ” who refused to join the League of Nations under any circumstances, and “Reservationists, ” led by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, Henry Cabot Lodge, who were willing to ratify the treaty with amendments.
