Detailed explanation-1: -Procedure. Dement and Kleitman (1957) is a classic study which explored sleep and dreaming using electronic recording as well as observation and diary methods. It is summarised in the box opposite. 7 male and 2 female participants, 5 of these studied in detail.

Detailed explanation-2: -What did Dement and Kleitman conclude about the relationship between dream content and eye movement? The self report method was used in this study to recall dream content. In each of the hypothesis they were awoken and asked to self report their dreams into a tape recorder.

Detailed explanation-3: -From the study by Dement and Kleitman, it was concluded that it is most likely that we on dream during REM sleep. Dreams are more likely to occur at the end of the night as REM time lasts longer. The occasional recall of dreams from nREM can be explained as memory of the previous stage of REM sleep.

Detailed explanation-4: -Research Hypothesis There will be a significant association between REM sleep and dreaming. There will be a positive correlation between the estimate of dream duration and REM period length. There will be a significant association between eye movement patterns and dream content.
