Detailed explanation-1: -Target training is when you teach an animal to touch a predetermined body part to a particular object. For example, teaching a dog to sit is training it to target its bottom to the floor.
Detailed explanation-2: -“Targeting” is a training concept which teaches an animal to touch a target (hand/spot/stick/light) with a part of their body – most often nose or paw. As many behaviours we teach our animals are quite complex, and are broken down into smaller steps, targeting makes it easier to communicate the next step to our dogs.
Detailed explanation-3: -Simply hold the object so it covers the palm of your hand. Then ask your dog to touch. As the object is in the way, your dog should touch the object instead. Click, praise, and reward when they do.
Detailed explanation-4: -A target stick is a great way to introduce your dog to polite walking. You can use the target stick to hold your dog’s attention and then walk with the stick pressed firmly to your side. As your dog is used to following and focusing on the target stick, they will walk gently beside you.
Detailed explanation-5: -Introducing a Hand Target Place your open palm close to your dog’s nose. Most dogs will instinctually want to sniff it. Once you feel the contact of their nose on your hand (even if it’s just a brush of their whiskers), click or say “yes!” and give the treat from the other hand. Repeat!
